But then again, this is real economy vs. Minecraft economy. 14 obsidian (I think that's the number for a gate, I could be mistaken) is relatively easy to get even without a diamond pick, you just have to trade something else in exchange for it. Seeing as the barter system doesn't run exclusively on diamonds, anyone could make a trip to the Nether.
