Much as the general human race enjoys being competitive and, especially in video-games, being able to kill other real, human folks -- I had at least thought MineRealm was aiming for an environment that didn't encourage that kind of conflict between people (but if that's not the case then oops, sorry!); There's a swear filter, a very healthy amount of parents and mature-minded folks who contribute a lot to a wonderful, friendly and safe community spirit free of competitive/PvP tension, and for the last year or two, PvP was only something that existed in the Nether and Wilderness landscape, but not in the main world where most of the server population builds, plays, explores, and chats.
I'm the sort of feller that still found plenty of danger and excitement in the threat of dying from creeper explosions, skeletons and zombies sneaking up during the night or while exploring a cave, accidentally looking at an Enderman, etc. MineRealm over the last 1-2 years for me might have disabled creeper explosions and TNT from destroying the landscape, but your coding didn't change the fact they could still surprise players in the vanilla Minecraft style where they spawn at night, could still surprise folks by swarming them, running into them in a cave or narrow space, etc.
But most importantly, there just wasn't much feeding grounds for PvP arguments and negative feelings and PvP hate/grudges between players to happen often on MineRealm in the last 1-2 years during my time here. With global PvP toggling on/off, even the few times it happens, there's just a more unpleasant feeling for a feller like me.
Just wanted to provide those additional thoughts on that, for folks reading in the future here.
Intelli makes a good point that substituting in the danger of surviving from vanilla Minecraft against creepers, hostile mobs, hunger death onto a multi-player server by encouraging (and allowing) players to globally kill each other (even if just infrequently), is a very good way to give excitement and thrills.
It's also encouraging a lot more potential for tough feelings and strained relationships between players on the server; that's the nature of PvP and competition, which the reward is getting exciting feelings of danger and thrills going up against a human opponent.
I always did enjoy the safety of being able to play on the main map with the server setting for PvP disabled by default for everyone unless you manually typed /pvp. Or if you risked the Nether/Wilderness, etc. Everywhere else, no matter how infrequent you might meet other players farther away from spawn, that safety in knowing they couldn't kill you or PvP you at all was... it was fun for me.
But one person's feeling of fun, especially for this old man, isn't exactly representative of what really is fun eh?
Alright, what's done is done. Said my piece now and that's enough from me in this thread. This ol' canadian had some great 1-2 years on MineRealm (and thanks for that, to many of ye!) in the state it was before the red mist and global pvp toggling started happening. To those that these new features are going to bring a lotta nice fun and extra years of enjoyment for you; Have a great time and try not to kill too many people that might start excessive community arguments or drama, hehe.
