It's also unfortunately, a mob that has a real human being behind it, complete with emotions, their own perspective and attitudes, etc, which turns it into a human vs human conflict.

Much as the general human race enjoys being competitive and, especially in video-games, being able to kill other real, human folks -- I had at least thought MineRealm was aiming for an environment that didn't encourage that kind of conflict between people (but if that's not the case then oops, sorry!); There's a swear filter, a very healthy amount of parents and mature-minded folks who contribute a lot to a wonderful, friendly and safe community spirit free of competitive/PvP tension, and for the last year or two, PvP was only something that existed in the Nether and Wilderness landscape, but not in the main world where most of the server population builds, plays, explores, and chats.

I'm the sort of feller that still found plenty of danger and excitement in the threat of dying from creeper explosions, skeletons and zombies sneaking up during the night or while exploring a cave, accidentally looking at an Enderman, etc. MineRealm over the last 1-2 years for me might have disabled creeper explosions and TNT from destroying the landscape, but your coding didn't change the fact they could still surprise players in the vanilla Minecraft style where they spawn at night, could still surprise folks by swarming them, running into them in a cave or narrow space, etc.

But most importantly, there just wasn't much feeding grounds for PvP arguments and negative feelings and PvP hate/grudges between players to happen often on MineRealm in the last 1-2 years during my time here. With global PvP toggling on/off, even the few times it happens, there's just a more unpleasant feeling for a feller like me.

Just wanted to provide those additional thoughts on that, for folks reading in the future here.

Intelli makes a good point that substituting in the danger of surviving from vanilla Minecraft against creepers, hostile mobs, hunger death onto a multi-player server by encouraging (and allowing) players to globally kill each other (even if just infrequently), is a very good way to give excitement and thrills.

It's also encouraging a lot more potential for tough feelings and strained relationships between players on the server; that's the nature of PvP and competition, which the reward is getting exciting feelings of danger and thrills going up against a human opponent.

I always did enjoy the safety of being able to play on the main map with the server setting for PvP disabled by default for everyone unless you manually typed /pvp. Or if you risked the Nether/Wilderness, etc. Everywhere else, no matter how infrequent you might meet other players farther away from spawn, that safety in knowing they couldn't kill you or PvP you at all was... it was fun for me.

But one person's feeling of fun, especially for this old man, isn't exactly representative of what really is fun eh?

Alright, what's done is done. Said my piece now and that's enough from me in this thread. This ol' canadian had some great 1-2 years on MineRealm (and thanks for that, to many of ye!) in the state it was before the red mist and global pvp toggling started happening. To those that these new features are going to bring a lotta nice fun and extra years of enjoyment for you; Have a great time and try not to kill too many people that might start excessive community arguments or drama, hehe.

I'd be pretty annoyed if the mist rolled in while on MineChat but otherwise it's fairly easy to avoid.
Grab yer crappy swords and armour, head to spawn, and mash that mouse button into oblivion!

I think for most players, one of the most exciting things about first playing Minecraft is the fact that there were deadly elements sitting outside your door (e.g. creepers), and actually having to worry about surviving your first Minecraft night.

Unfortunately, certain elements have to be disabled on MineRealm, such as creeper explosions, due to the fact that griefers abuse them to destroy structures. However, this doesn't mean we can't substitute them with other gameplay elements. A player sitting outside your door is essentially a more intelligent, more dangerous, unpredictable mob.

I would argue that if there's no threat of death or destruction on the server, we'd be missing the very spirit of Minecraft itself. The mist is a rare enough occurrence, that it's a minor inconvenience for players who decide to just wait it out in an safe place.
Agreed. The mist is just one of those things that adds excitement and realism to the game.. I'm sure we all wished creepers didn't exist when we started out, but in time they grew less threatening and dangerous. For most of the developed players, mist shouldn't be a problem anyways. Personally, I've always wanted a reason to turn my realms into fortified super-secure compounds, and now I have one! I mean.. you could ride a horse into spawn and get people to chase you around if you're looking for some thrill one night. But in all seriousness lets be honest, mist isn't actually a threat to most of us. A quick /home is all you need to stay safe for the night, and who can't wait 5 minutes if you want to /spawn.
I would actually really like the idea of full-time (or public land) overworld pvp just because of the excitement it will create.

A really cool thing happens (the wipe), but then it's paired with this? I'm very surprised people would actually like this. So it's now somewhat less likely that a given player will "survive," and that's considered exciting. I'm guessing the idea came from people saying they are bored and such, but they will be bored regardless of the likelihood of dying. They're bored because they've played Minecraft too much, and need to do something else instead.

Perhaps this aspect could be solved by increasing the server difficulty to normal, or re-instituting the automatic aggressiveness of zombie pigmen.
The mist seems like a less thought-out method IMO.

Will the mist cause a plethora of arguments? No, not at all.
I disagree, since it literally already has.

I believe that the mist is a very interesting and lively addition but fundamentally it's just inviting the negative consequences of PvP to have a field day. To me, it is utter drivel that people wish to PvP, and whether they know it or not, destroy relationships with each other that have been being built for years. If you want to PvP, then do so on a PvP server. And if you can't seem to be able to resist the urge to fight and tear this whole community apart, then why should there be features to cater to you and force others to fight or hide against their will?

As Voltaire said, "I disagree with what you have to say but will defend to death your right to say it". That is my attitude of this conflict, but I'm finding it very hard to see logic in defending the implementation of the mist.

When I was bored on MR/banned for X-Raying, I found the sudden chaos of a ban-on-death-server to be utterly thrilling. No mob protection, sudden odds that you'll need to snag an alt to continue a mindless rampage, all that jazz.

I say leave it as is. Boredom comes from monotony. Change is good.

Yes, players are, for the most part, more intelligent that creepers and mobs, but they do not despawn like hostile mobs.
My concern is that what if someone shows up at your /home, kills you, and camps that spot for the remainder of the Mist? Not only have you lost your stuff, but you've also lost a chance to reclaim it. Type /home, and your killer is waiting there to kill you. This time, more easily.

I can only see more arguments and PvP logging and camping come from this.
However, if this were changed so that PvP could be toggle able in any private plot (the default setting being Mist PvP turned on), player activity would increase since there is a new motivation to purchase realms.
Or, once a player has been killed by another, the killer cannot harm the victim for a brief amount of time.

So as I just found out this "Mist" also disables buttons, even if they're my own....

As I just said in chat; This mist is a pointless effort to try to spice up the server and will only bring about a slew of poorly thought-out arguments in chat, complaints of PVP-logging and a large amount of confusion for new players just joining.

I will be taking a leave of absence until this mist is removed, so I certainly hope it gets removed soon.

The concept is cool, but the practicality just isn't there. You /spawn or die once, and you're either waiting it out or you're gonna die over and over again the moment you respawn. It makes the game unplayable if you die. Not to mention, but imagine all the new people who join the server, die instantly 5 times in a row. Don't think they'll be staying around long on a server where you can't even spawn. I like the idea, I just feel like there needs to be some more measures put into place not to hamper the minerealm experience for other players.
