They released the Hanger module over the summer, where you can basically walk around your ships in the hanger. They are planning on releasing a dogfighting alpha module this winter at some point. They are thinking they will have the single player campaign ready summer 2014, and are expecting to release the full game early 2015. That is a long time, but they have been hitting their milestones, and it will be a massive game. This is in contrast to a lot of other crowdfunded games that promise 6 months, and then delay for the next year.
I know what you mean, my set idea of release dates is based on that fact that whenever a developer announces a game, they usually only release the game a year to a year and a half later and since most games follow the same pattern, a long wait time is usually uncommon. The fact that they have a major project and had released the trailer so early when they plan to release the game in 3 years just feels like an anomaly since most games release in half that time.

That first trailer is also a modified version of their original one, which includes some more recent stuff. Probably the first one is visible on their kickstarter profile here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen

It also helps that their trailer really didn't contain that much of the actual game, just because the game is massive. They have also been able to add things as they reach stretch goals (They have added boarding mechanics, so you will be able to board a ship, and shoot the other people in it, etc.). All of that does take time to do.

This has been my #1 most anticipated game for ages, I absolutely cannot wait for it to be released.

If it has anything like the depth and strategy of Eve Online combined with proper piloting I will probably never play another game.

Yeah, I've been following it since they announced the same guy who did Wing Commander and Privateer was doing it. I might also have a Constellation...

I also might have warned Intelli that this game may eat my soul.

Funny you should mention that... I've been having quite a bit of fun watching the folks at Mittani's website bicker about the game. Whenever they publish an article about SC, the comments section is turns into an argument between those who think/hope it's going to be the best scifi game of all time and those who expect it to crash and burn and infuriate those who put a lot of money into the crowdfunding.

As for me, I'm just going to wait and see about this one. It certainly looks good in the trailers, but I'm a bit wary about paying up-front for stuff in a game so far from release.

That is definitely reasonable. A lot of people seem to approach crowdfunding as something that should produce an amazing game in the next couple months, when it is really taking a gamble in very early development. I'm lucky in the none of the games I have backed have failed yet (though they haven't released yet either). At least one of them has pushed back their expected release date by some indefinite amount of time that may be one year, but they explained well and kept the backers updated on what is going on, which is the important thing in my opinion.

There are two main reasons why I am willing to back Star Citizen. The first, is that Chris Roberts has a lot of history, and I've enjoyed his previous games. This was enough to get me to back at one of the low levels early on.

The second reason, is that as it has been going, the dev team has been active in the community. They pay attention to what the community says. Because of this, I decided that if the game does screw up, they will work to fix it. They built up enough trust by their actions that I was willing to go in to back them at higher levels.

All of this being said, I acknowledge that there is definitely a chance that problems will happen. Backing a game during crowdfunding is not something that is necessarily for everyone, and I don't think that is a bad thing.

I personally cannot wait until the Alpha/Beta/Release so I can get to play it. My GTX 670 is going to finally face a worthy challenge, even with this overclock I've done with it.

Raising 27 million is a pretty huge deal, which means they aren't likely to fail now. There are so many in development blogs and activity on the forums that this is really a game that can't fail at this point.

Eve online is a great game, but its just so unwelcoming to new players, and flying in space isn't even that fun. I have a 30 million skill point character, which is a pretty big deal, I've flown with the largest wormhole alliances around, but have never really been involved with what makes Eve huge... the giant super-capital battles. Eve has so much strategic depth to it that its overwhelming in a sense... and incredibly boring to play alone. Getting a corp is fine and all but you really do need some friends alongside you. I'm hoping that star citizen will be the more user-friendly game, allowing my friends to get in on the action.

The way they have talked about instanced battles though, and the fact that the universe simply isn't as brutal as Eve's makes me think that Space Citizen will turn away many of the hard core Eve fans. Space Citizen just won't have what makes Eve Eve.... but it will be an incredibly awesome space game.

Btw, you can already download what they are calling the 'Hangar app' which actually lets you go inside your hangar, walk around and see your ships inside the engine. Its looking pretty cool.

Mitchie, I guess my somewhat reserved level of enthusiasm about SC is based on trying to compare it against Eve. Using Eve as a benchmark is admittedly a bit unfair, since like you said SC isn't trying to be like Eve in terms of difficulty / learning curve. (IIRC one of the Eve devs claimed that sandbox-based fantasy MMOs are a more direct competitor to Eve than less-sandbox-based scifi MMOs like SC.) In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with their pile of money, regardless of whether or not I eventually join in.

Kero, good point Re: being able to trust the developer. I remember being similarly ambivalent about Minecraft years ago, but Notch's then-regular blog updates convinced me that the game he was selling in alpha would in fact be finished and released. And if you have a developer with a long history of success, so much the better.
