I \'m gonna start out by saying I really did like the countries thing. There were flaws in it, sure, but no system can please everyone.
I did vote for option B (realms), simply because I liked the feeling of being official, so that everyone who came upon a town would know what that place was. Not to say that I support the teensy-tiny little realms dotting the map: I definitely think that realms and the officialness that they bring is a reward and symbol of prestige, not a right.
The problem with this is boundaries, of course. Say a 200x200 realm has 20 members, they have to fit everyone's personal space, and every realm-wide building (say, arenas, etc.) in a square. You can't just build, there are limitations on the area you can build, and there are possibly (hell, probably) limitations set by realm leaders on how much space you can take up. So honestly, I wish I could take back my vote, because anything that limits the growth of the community is not fully benefitting the community.
I really believe that with the basic tools proposed for 3.0, realms will be obsolete. I am a staunch opponent of being able to turn visitors off. Seriously people? You have SSP to hide in your hole. I do find chest protection to be important: yes, you can go on about my sense of entitlement, etcetera, etcetera, but people out there DO have hacks. "Build far from spawn," yes, I intend to. Not a guarantee (again, sense of entitlement, security; we've heard it all before). "Hide your chests," hacks exist, my good sir. Not a guarantee.
On the subject of player rollbacks, I'm a little iffy, if only because there's no hard and fast rule yet on WHEN they'll be applied. The griefing protection tools I think should stay, because really, no griefing is better than yes griefing, and many of you who demand a vanilla server will be the ones crying to the Mods about griefers.
I'd like to keep the chat parties thing, if only so that people living in a community could communicate more easily, and without cluttering the public chat.
So, all in all? Upon further reflection, I like option A better than B. It'll be nice to have to a server wide community, rather than hiding in ones and twos without communicating with anyone else, while simultaneously not having to be paranoid about griefing and theft. I look forward to really exploring the map, in ways I haven't, because I have /realm warp. My one suggestion would be a way to return to the place you just warped AWAY from, perhaps for a limited time (say, you /spawn to make a trade, but then end up miles away from where you were. So, for 5-10 minutes, say, you could type /return warp or something to go back there).
If realms were removed, I would really enjoy a bigger map, since it doesn't produce lag, which will be reduced anyway by the removal of some of the plugins. It would be fantastic to be able to spread out and explore a 10,000x10,000 map, or an even larger one.
I look forward to seeing what the finished 3.0 brings
