This is just a strange thought. I know you wont like it.

what if all realms were owned by the server as default, and you couldnt build on them until you bought them. maybe in the 1000x1000 area arround spawn. The land would be untouched, no landscape griefing, no cobble huts.
If you combine this with a wilderness, a pvp/mining/freebuild area, it would work.

this will only dishearten newbies more than ever, as they'd have to walk even further to find public land to build on, it would also create one more race that comes with a map wipe, the race to see who can log in first and dig out 20k blocks first to get the spawn realm. The only way to avoid this would be to start everyone at a random point somewhere on the world, and to set it so only Intelli can initially buy the realms immediately at spawn. That should control the race for credits dramatically.

A ring of land around spawn would become a giant public mine? Whilst the lands further out would stay pristine until purchased? Awesome, I love mulling over the occassional radical idea to see how things work out. Sounds like a party server idea. Not sure if it would work well, but wouldn't mind trying it out....
