I have yet to invest in a drawing tablet, but I do think they are a good investment.
I still drawing by hand, scan in to the computer and then use gimp to draw over the scaned image and then colour in using gimp.

Wacom and Bamboo are both brands that seem to be popular.
A bigger screen would come in handy I reckon, but they are more expensive.
Depends on your budget, smaller beginner tablets have come done in price and can be quite affordable, but it would be worth saving up to get a larger tablet if you can.
