Everything that doesn't give you an advantage and only serves to enhance the visual/audible experience is not considered hacking. Minimaps are allowed, texture packs are allowed, compasses are allowed (there's ever a server mod which you can use by typing /compass)

I don't know how to install the minimap...Are you able to give instructions? I downloaded the mod loader and put it in my minecraft.jar file. Now when I log in the screen goes black...

Did you follow all the instructions for mod loader? Because there is one particular instruction that if you do not follow, it will give you a black screen 100% of the time. Perhaps you should read the instructions more closely.
