It's definitely not very hard to restore to a later version. We'd be going to 1.4_1 in this case. We went to a server with 1.5 mods because the majority of players had already upgraded, and were unable to log on (I assume at least, correct me if I'm wrong). Downgrading would then require everyone who's upgraded to replace the .jar file in the .minecraft folder. Most people don't keep backups of their bin every patch, so someone would have to provide it. The problem here is that doing so is forbidden by Notch or something along those lines, so Intelli does not allow it. Last time someone tried to post one, the post was deleted soon after.
I for one like temporary maps. Something about them is just refreshing. I say enjoy it while it last, and let the mods ban the idiots acting up when we get back. I do hate having to tell half of the people logging on that there wasn't a server wipe, so It'd be beneficial if the yellow text flashed and punched you in the face after logging onto the server for the first time.
