Notice: Here's the New Details for how it will work:
It is expected that an official tournament for this will not be possible, as each round will take roughly 40-50 minutes. So, Builders can keep training for their times on their own freetime, and then if they feel ready, they may ask me and I will get them set up:
-When they want to get a time for their vault, they let me know, I bring them to the place to construct it (timed of course).
---After 15 minutes, any of the designated looters are free to run it. Each looter will be their separate division, so that each Builder can be ranked within the divisions, and each looter can be ranked against each other at the same time. For example: Cerevox Division may mean that Pandagames07's vault has a 7 second faster time than it is in the Lightbulbs Division, or whatever.


Basic Information: Players competing will have to design a chest to protect the loot. Should their chest survive against the others as the most difficult to steal from, they win an amount I will determine later in the post. The player that breaks into the chests gets to keep an amount I will determine later. I will assign this looter by my inferring of the most clever players on the server.

The Rules (Builders):
  • -Your chest protection system can be at maximum 12x12x12. A single block over leads to disqualification.
    -You cannot use obsidian, iron blocks, or diamond blocks.
    -You can use other chests.
    -You cannot use glitches (chest-crash glitches, etc).
    -The chest can be inaccessible from ground level.
    -It is a double chest.
    -You yourself cannot impede the looter's attempts to break into the chest (no fighting him!)
    -You will construct your chests in the wilderness in a location I designate.
    -From my command, you have 15 minutes to construct it.
    -You cannot interfere with other builders.
    -You must give all chest contents to me after the tests have been completed.
    -You will be given time after each trial to repair your locking device.
    -(Undetermined) You are limited to the use of 250 blocks of any kind in your design. This does not include redstone, torches, or other non-blocks. But it does include half blocks.
    -Builders may use up to one lava source block and two water source blocks.
    -When using decoy chests, they may NOT contain diamonds or iron. They may also be empty.
The Rules (Looters):
Looters all are allowed to have 128 Dirt in their inventory to begin with. They may use dirt up to exactly 1 block outside of the cube (right next to it) as well as anywhere inside it. Furthermore, choice of tools:

-1 Diamond Pickaxe
-4 Stone Pickaxes and 4 Stone Shovels
-4 Gold Pickaxes and 4 Gold Shovels
  • -You must give all chest contents to me after all of the tests have been completed. You will be given appropriate rewards later.
    -You may utilize the materials that are dropped when you begin each device.
    -TNT or other methods of block destruction (not including fists / given tools) is not allowed.
    -Your time trial ends once the items of the chest have been successfully given back to me.
    -Dying while looting the chest leads to a DNF (did not finish) time for that chest.
    -Using a transparent texture pack is illegal and will result in an instant ban from the server.
    -Looters may begin at any position directly outside (one block away from, above, or directly below) the 12x12x12 of their choosing.
    -Looters begin with 128 (2 stacks) of dirt.
Winning (Builders):
  • -To win as a Builder:
    • -Your design must withstand looting for the longest AVERAGE time against all others.
Prizes: 1st Place receives all of the contents of all of the chests minus the other prizes:
-2nd Place receives the contents of its chest.
-Every other competitor receives 1 piece of the contents of their chest should the average time of their design exceed 50 seconds.

Winning (Looters):
  • -To win as a Looter:
    • -You must possess the fastest composite times on all devices (meaning the time it takes to clear each chest combined, lowest time wins).
Prizes: 1st Place receives 70% the contents of all of the chests.
-2nd Place receives 20% the contents of all of the chests.
-3rd Place receives 10% the contents of all of the chests.

What If's And Further Explanation
All of the divisions are ranked separately. Each Builder has a single time in each division that is ranked against other Builders. The leaders of each division receive undetermined prizes.

The times for each player for each Division are also ranked against other Divisions so that the Looters themselves have competitive times for each player's vault.

The average times for each player for Each Division are also ranked for each player so that the players know, on AVERAGE, who is the best Chest Protector designer?

What if my Division Looter dies to my trap? Then the Builder receives a one diamond bonus reward automatically. Also, the Division time for that vault will be labeled automatically as tied with the current Division Leader and labeled (DNF).

Example:
Cerevox Division TIMES:
Pandagames07-------1:57..............1st
Intelli--------------------1:57 (DNF).....1st
Kerovon----------------1:55..............2nd
Panthers17nfl---------0:47..............3rd


So What are the Contents of Each Chest?
Each chest will house an undetermined value between 5 and 10 diamonds, or 10 and 20 iron.

Will it Cost Money to Participate?
It is undetermined, but to participate as a Builder may require an entry fee of anywhere from 2-8 diamonds (I myself don't have many diamonds to make this interesting, so I'll need help :P).

Who are the Looters?
The Looters are all players I have invited and selected to participate as such due to their experience with the dark arts of Minecraft (or in combating it). This does not label these players as "looters" or "bad people", but rather people I find clever enough to be capable of partaking in this task on a competitive level. That being said, do NOT be offended if you aren't on this list. It is very concise as I don't want to have to manage many Looters :P.

Officially Recognized Looter Divisions (and projected difficulty levels):
Cerevox Division: Lead Heat
Lightbulbs Division: Fast Heat
Kerovon Division: Fast Heat
Smoothzcriminal Division: Slow Heat (prove me wrong :P)


So if I win, is there any Extra Glory?
Yes; the winning Builder will be recognized in the next Player's Issue and their design will be released at their discretion so that the server can learn the fundamentals of protecting their chests. It will be good information because this design will have been tested very competitively by multiple Looter divisions!

The winning Looter will also be recognized for his cunning and ability to infiltrate the chests, reaping the benefits. Their notoriety on the server may plummet, but they should be revered for their ability to accomplish this difficult, competitive task :).

Where Builders Will Build
I am going to construct 14x14x14 dirt, hollowed cubes, which would make it large enough to house the 12x12x12 space one needs to construct their device. Each one of these will be assigned a player to keep it clear. These cubes will be floating so that no outside terrain may be used in the device, both by the Looter and the Builder.

What is the Point of This?
I am not a very strong supporter of Looting being against the rules. Granted, it is a very bad behavior that I myself despise, but I feel that it allows players to be too comfortable with leaving their chests out in the open, and should Looting be allowed, they may be more careful. This competition is to test how well our players can protect their chests when there are oodles of diamonds on the line.

Alas, looting is against the rules and I ban people regularly for it. This competition does NOT in any way encourage players to hone their looting skills (as I've selected who I want to see be the Looters). Builders are encouraged to protect their chests, and hopefully this serves as a very valuable lesson for the server as a whole.

Also, if you are trying to become a Looter, don't argue saying that "I loot all the time, look!" Argue your wit and intelligence that would help you win this competition instead.

This is an outrage! I should be on this list on account of multiple things.
1. I killed Intelli-nuff said
2. I have trapped the chest filled with Intelli's stuff using various dispensers and clock repeaters
3. I have been kicked from my realm about ten times for being too "sketchy"
4. I have convinced Allllllllll and Joey_smith to reinvite me (if you don't know who they are read This and This)

I think if someone wants to be a looter they should argue it from a point of looting all the time. They should also provide screenshots, or video if possible, of them looting well known location on minerealm as proof of their skill.

Not really surprised to see myself on such a list for various reasons >_>

However, it is immediately apparent that with the current listed gear that the best possible vault would be a solid cube of iron blocks, as both stone and gold take 25 seconds to mine each block, longer than the 15 seconds for a diamond pick on obsidian.

If iron blocks are ruled out, a solid cube of furnaces becomes the next best option with each taking 5.25 seconds per block.

Or just coat the whole thing in lava. Looters have no way to enter with the listed tools, unless we are allowed to dig up the surrounding terrain to use.

Honestly, i can't see any use for cleverness on the builder's part with any sort of traps as the looter could easily spot anything. Worst case is the looter takes 1-2 hits from an arrow dispenser before backing off and digging in elsewhere, but the size a trap would take up would mean the walls would be too thin to slow the looter significantly. Not even worth considering.

In effect, this would be a competition of who can click-mine the best to gain the .16 second advantage per block.

This is a great idea, but the rules as stated pose almost no real difficulty or cleverness, the only thing being measured is how fast we are on the left mouse button.

I assume when you say looters can use the stuff dropped when they begin the device to mean they can use parts of the builders vault to help them. However, this is all still defeated by putting a lava shell around the vault. It can bone done easily such that the looter must cross the lava to reach the chest and with all blocks on the inside of the lava any block the looter breaks is destroyed before he can collect it. Impenetrable under the current rules.

To make it even funnier in the lava sitaution, if the 12 cube is floating in the 14 cube it would also be impossible for the looter to stand on anything to enter the 12 cube, even assuming he was immune to lava, since any blocks would be destroyed before he could collect and place them to form stairs.

So, is there any standard starting spot for the looter or does he enter the 14 cube anywhere he wants?

Or, just make the entire outer wall of tnt. Looter breaks any of it, it sets it all off. In a 14x14x14 cube, there is no space to hide from a 12x12x12 shell of tnt. Instagib every time if the looter even touches the 12 cube.

Panther, this is a great idea, but with the looters restricted this much and trapped next to a huge cube the builders just made, its more a thought exercise in how to slaughter a player rather than a competition of looting. And if the builders were heavily restricted it would just be a click-mine competition.
