An explanation would be good but a before/after sample would be fantastic to see what it can do.
Fireworks is what I use to create buttons for websites. For example, I can create a rollover (when your mouse is hovering over the button, it changes) then save it in a way that is easily insertable into Dreamweaver or an HTML file. Unfortunately, I don't have an example that really shows that well. For people who are familiar with Adobe/Macromedia products, and/or are design minded (rather than code minded), it is easier to create elements like that in a program that then writes the CSS for you rather than writing it yourself.
One thing that I can link to that I used Fireworks for is the menu I created for a family member's business. (
http://www.guytonproperties.com/cottonoil.html). The website isn't fully functional, but the menu bar can give you an idea of what is doable in Fireworks. EDIT- in the link, on the menu bar, scroll over PROPERTIES to see what I'm talking about.
TL;DR- Fireworks helps design minded people add Java/CSS elements to their websites.
