The flame-like design along the bottom is extremely well-done though--definitely my favorite part of the image.

Thanks for the help and the complement. :) The flames were fairly easy to do. I made a brush earlier this year for fun. I could probably make a tutorial for making them.

Yes, I definitely like the background better in the new version. The guy on the left is still a little bit tough to see against the background, but the guy on the right is good.
