I don't think this can be done because paintings count as an entity, not a block. Looks like you will have to deal with it...

Im pretty sure signs are still counted as blocks, but paintings can't do anything as soon as we go to check the instantly pop off either way and leave no black data.

i don't think people are taking them. i did at first, but my houses are locked up tight and they all disappear after a short amount of time no matter what.... i miss them

All I ever use paintings for really.

But it's useless because they either A) Disappear or B) get stolen.

Paintings just disappear, also in locked rooms.
Some texture packs make paintings look like curtains, or signs.

I often want to use paintings for decoration. My TV screen is always black

Step 2: Tape down your shift button so you remain sneaking. Go ask for a while.
Step 3: Record thief stealing your painting.
