I suspect it has something to do with email addresses and minecraft / forum accounts. Maybe it checks the email address used for the forum account against your email address plugged into minerealm (with that /email command we had to use to get rid of the popup), to show what a forum user's in-game name (IGN) is. Not sure why that needs to be done though... maybe for the benefit of people whose forum name is slightly different than minecraft names?
