It is simple, you enjoy the thrill of constantly being in danger of getting killed by someone, I don't, I hate it(at least when I don't have a choice about it). When I want to mine, travel, hunt etc. I want to mine, travel, hunt etc. and not constantly look around for anyone who wants to come by and kill me or to be forced to do something different. And if I want to have that thrill I go into the nether. That is the entire point of it. You shouldn't be able to freely go get resources how you please. This is a survival server, not creative. Leaving the safety of your home to gather resources in a potentially dangerous environment is why it should be implemented again in order to make the game firstly more vanilla, but secondly to remind people of how Minecraft Survival was meant to be played.
Also if it outside of that area isn't that much of a danger, why change it at all? If it isn't that much of a danger and you hardly meet anyone then there is no real sense in doing it in the first place.
A possibility I would agree with would be expanding the map/adding another world etc. and activating PvP there, but not to suddenly force people into PvP mode around their home whether they want to or not.
