Downsides, think of the downsides...

It's already good enough that you can break 200 dirt and buy a diamond. But, you have to find someone selling the diamonds and go to trade and buy them. It's far to easy if I can just go to a shop and click on a sign.

It feels way to chocolately. Yes, it's legitly mined and sold, but it still feels like I made 64 iron pop out of thin air. Imo, it's better to trade a real player, because you know they actually mined that iron.

I should not be able to instantly buy something I need like that. I should have to find someone selling, find an agreeable price, and meet them at trade.

I can see why you would want a system like this, but honestly pretty much every server out there has this feature in some way. I like MineRealm, because it is unique. The trade based system that we have promotes activity and helps players interact with others. If we are truly in need of a new trading system I would like to see a unique one that still promotes activity, and player interaction.

NO!
Disagreed.
95% of the posters say yes and some want some helpful improvements. Just because spawn realm owners realms near spawn, doesn't mean they have to sell, or you have to buy.

Are you insane?

Why should trading be difficult?

Trade works fine. Ensures supply and demand economics. Would you rather simply ask in chat if anyone is selling a particular item or would you rather traverse hundreds if not thousands of blocks checking if certain "cheaply priced" stores have an item in stock? Also as has already been said trade also ensures player interaction. You're not going to constantly troll people that you do business with. If all you have to do is walk into their store when they're not around and click a sign though... well you don't really have to be nice anymore do you?

At the end of the day any store near spawn or priced low will run out of stock quickly. Afterwards you will still be paying whatever the seller of the item, you must have that minute, decides that item is worth.

You are assuming that regulars are always online and always selling what you are looking for. Many times I have spent a solid 15-20 minutes looking for someone who could sell me a particular item (redstone, logs, diamonds, glass, bricks, average stuff like that) and have had no luck. The possibility of a couple of stores around spawns that could be quickly and easily checked for small purchases and common items would be a welcome relief for me.

So you are saying we should reinvent the wheel because we wouldn't be unique enough otherwise? The reason so many servers use such a system is that it works and I don't think doing something differently from all other just for the sake of being different is all that reasonable. If naturally someone comes up with a totally innovative design that has some pros or fits better into the server, great. (And I think we should search for a solution that is perfect for this server.) But being different just for the sake of being different ... no I don't think that is a good enough reason.

@all:
You are saying the current system is promoting player interaction, to me it is simply annoying. x minutes/hours(depending on product) asking to buy/sell something, 5-15 minutes bartering, tp to trade, exchange and finished. And most of all every time I think about buying something and asking for it I keep thinking "in the time I now use to find someone to sell me the stuff I need I can as well start to gather it myself and save the credits".
To each his own I guess but that is how I feel about the current trading system, it is simply taking too much time in my opinion and I don't particularly enjoy that kind of player Interaction.

Certain items are rare and very few people have any kind of stock in them. Thus you may not get many replies. That won't change in auto-shops. Very few places will have slimes for example. Other items such as cobble, dirt, redstone are worth so little that it's simply not worth the time to sell to you peoplein small quantiities. Pro Tip - Make the sale worth it and you'll have better luck.

Bottom line - This is just going to be a big waste of time also.
