Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem or is it just me. I live near the southern edge of the map. After the second map wipe all the animals around my realms disappeared (as was announced was going to happen) but they've never seemed to come back, and it's been this way for the better part of a month now.

So I decided to breed animals and tried a couple of times to set up a corral. I get a breeding pair in (whether it is cattle, chicken, or pigs) but after a bit they start despawning on me. I've seen this happen right in front of me like three times, which is really disturbing because one set of cows I brought back almost from center spawn. Twice now I've tried pulling pigs back to my realm and they despawn on me on the way!

Yesterday, hazzaaah! I found a pack of pigs spawned right next to my realm! Just to be careful, I bred a couple pairs. Today I came back and again! right in front of my face! the whole pack, piglets and all despawn!

So my question(s) is is this a server bug, and is this happening to anyone else? Since food animals are very scarce in my area, I'm starting to dip into stores from before the map wipe, & I'm getting fairly alarmed.

Thanks for any help,

Intelli made it so you can't breed too many animals in a given area. Mobs despawn when they're too close together. They also may suffocate if you're not too careful. Your best bet is to cage them in a glass box and only keep 2 at a time.

By the way, you do know there are other sources of food, correct?

Right, but I don't have a huge corral, I'm talking maybe 4 animals at the most, and I've had it where I've only had two cows and they both disappeared. If this is the case where we're so severely restricted so as to make breeding not possible, that would be okay if there were more spawning in the wild. I haven't seen any wildlife (except sheep and only a few of them) in my neck of the woods almost since the last wipe. I don't mind going hunting (it's what I did before the wipe) but I don't want to have to make a major trek just to get lunch.

I have a pretty decent wheat field, but I've heard if you only consume bread your hunger bar depletes faster than if you also eat meat (Notch must want us to have a balanced diet).

Thanks for the info though....

I doubt that hunger thing is true... hunger goes down faster when you do stuff. Jumping, digging, walking, swimming, all take hunger... and I believe some take more than others. Sprinting drains it super fast. If you stand still, your hunger bar probably won't deplete at all.

There are some conditions that need to be met for neutral mobs to spawn. First, I believe there needs to be grass. Pretty sure they spawn on grass, and only grass. Second, the server cap cannot be maxed out. i.e. If the number of passive mobs is equal to or exceeds the limit, passive mobs won't spawn. I'm not sure how it works with loaded/not loaded chunks (do passive mobs in chunks that are not loaded count towards that limit?). Also, I believe mobs will only actively spawn in chunks that are loaded. They're supposed to spawn within like 17 chunks of the player... but I have a feeling that doesn't happen on this server. The server loads like 5 chunks around you or something (just a guess).

My point is: It takes a while. I'm positive that they do spawn though.

EDIT: Oh and I think the cap for mobs is 6 in "close proximity". My sheep seem to despawn when it hits 7.

Thanks for the info. I've done a bit more reading on the forums, and I guess I'm really dissappointed that the cap is so low. I would think that some of the massive monster farms I've heard about would produce way more lag than a poor schmuck like myself wanting to keep 20-30 animals. I'm certainly not wanting to make a 200-300 animal farm like some that I've read about.

I'm really disappointed that I can't do this, especially now that breeding is so much part of the vanilla minecraft experience. Maybe Intelli will up the cap so we can at least have some livestock.

The mob limiter script only does the following:

1. Checks each mob loaded into memory.
2. Finds other mobs within 3 blocks of that mob
3. If it finds more than 5 mobs, it removes the additional mobs.

So to clarify, if you have 5 mobs in one spot, it will not remove them.
If you have 11 mobs in one spot, it will remove 6 of them, and leave 5.

Wow, thats news to me. I was led to belive by some of the mods that it was within 10 blocks.

Good, finally, that this fact was revealed.

Thanks Intelli :)
