Have you ever wondered, what comes next? What does the future hold? Did you ever wish for your dreams to come true? Well, if your dreams are about Minecraft, they just might! Especially if you dream about wolves and achievements.
Minecraft Beta 1.4, the next patch for our favorite game, will be coming out in a week or two. Its highlights? Wolves, achievements, stats, and a new bed mechanic. And of course, as always, there will be many secret additions that are left to us, the players, to find.
First off, let's talk about the wolves. The wolf is a new mob that can be found wandering in the wild. Currently, there's only type of wolf, but biome-specific wolves are a planned addition. This new mob is supposed to be quite a bit rarer than other mobs, but that is because the wolf is special - it can be tamed (Woof!)! Yes folks, you will soon be able to have your own wolf pack (I'm guessing the members of The Wolves Den will be quite thrilled). How do you tame them? Believe it or not, it's easier than taking candy from a baby - there's no taking involved. The wolf tilts its head whenever it's interested in the item you have in your hand. You simply have to give the dog a bone. They also love ham, and giving it to them will heal them. Furthermore, the wolf will attack any mob (and presumably, player) that you hit in melee (sorry, archers). Once tamed, wolves are your companions for life - they will never abandon you. You can command them to sit, and they will wait - patiently and silently. When asked how will the wolves work in SMP, Jeb (one of the Minecraft developers) said that when warping and teleporting the wolves will not warp with you. They will sit and wait for your return. Expect a full wolf coverage as soon as 1.4 launches!
One of the other main features of 1.4 are the achievements. Not much is know about these, only the fact that they will not be chores. That means there won't be achievements like ''Chop down 100 trees'' - they will be more in the lines of ''Ride a pig of a cliff'' or ''Fall 60 blocks without dying''. Nothing but fun stuff, all in all. Stats will also be added, keeping track of how many blocks of what kind have you placed or destroyed, and the like. Of course, expect a full coverage on 1.4 Launch day.
Other features include adding one particular thing that wasn't ready for 1.3. Yep, you're guessing, it's more bed functionality. The beds will finally serve their true purpose - whenever you leave a bed, whether you slept in it or not, it will become your spawn point. This is great news for single player, but not so much for Bukkit developers, as the code for that will probably interfere with existing teleportation mods, such as the /home we all use. Besides the added bed functionality, expect a lot of bug fixes, but don't hope for a new block. The last few updates (1.2 and 1.3) added a hefty amount, and no new blocks have been created for the update so far - but you never know!
One important notice - if you wish to continue playing on Minerealm right after the update, it is advised NOT to update your client, as the server won't be updated straight away. It will likely take a few days, since both Bukkit and the Realm plugin have to be modified to work with 1.4.
If you have any questions regarding 1.4, feel free to ask, and I will answer them the best I can.
