There is a fair share of "portal camping," going on in the world of Minerealm lately. I've done my fair share, others have been banned for such events as well. Now I'm not here to defend or justify the means of portal camping. I'm here to let you all know why it is a considerably bannable offense.
[[ :. Commonly Asked Questions .: ]]
Can I kill someone if they've been standing in the portal room for a while?
This depends. In the past, people thought there was some form of "Safe Zone," in the immediate portal area. However, it was later proved by Intelli that his intentions were for the nether to be full PvP and that there never was; said, "Safe Zone." You are allowed to kill a player there if they are inactive or immobile for a minute or more. (Unless justified otherwise by a staff member)
If a player just entering the nether attacks me, can I fight back?
No. In no situation should you even "consider" clicking the attack button. Let them kill you, even if you have a stack of diamonds on you. Any PvPing near the portal is illegal when one player has just entered the room. There is to be no confusion of that. (Any lost items can be force dropped by an admin)
What if a player enters the nether, and I follow him out of the room then kill him?
You will be banned. (I learned this the hard way) Any player entering the nether has the right to go on his way without being followed, it is considered camping when you wait for a target at x, and follow them to z to get a kill.
[[ :. Some useful information .: ]]
Of course some people know the "Hot Spots," of the nether, where there is a high traffic of players who are unarmed and easy to kill. It is in the servers best interest that you do not just stand in these areas with Diamond Armor and a Diamond Sword with a group of your friends, picking off players as they come and go. This ruins the fun for everyone, and doesn't give people a fair chance. In my honest opinion, this is just as bad as portal camping because there is 0% chance of the other players making it by you. Now, these hot spots are usually around the portal area, that being said it's safe to assume you were watching to portal when you saw them coming by, this would mean you were portal camping.
Another bit of information you might want to know; is that regardless of how far from the portal you are when you kill a player, if you followed him from the portal you will still be banned. It could be 500 blocks, or 2,000 blocks away from the portal, but in the end, you still camped, and if you hadn't been camping there, the player would have had a better chance of making his journey safely without a disadvantage like such.
I personally am going to avoid the nether since what happened (twice) to me. I'd advise any risk takers to "Fraps," or record any events of portal camping in hopes of getting them banned. It seems to be the case lately, that most people get a team of players to hang out in portal rooms killing people, unarmed or not. I unfortunately don't have fraps, but I still encourage each and every one of you to use your head before killing people. Think about the consequences of your actions as well.
