I think rather than lowering the limit and shutting out some of the better players while some new people who may just come and go are in the game, a sort of mechanism to prove your worth would be much better. Yeah, extreme, but its better than just making it impossible for good gamers to join while crappy temp ones take their spots. An example? have to have a certain level of achievements, build something actually decent in creative, etc. Just some ideas. Not everyone has the patience to sit around and hit refresh with no guarantee of getting in, and it would probably lead to some decent and veteran players just giving up on trying to join. Very discouraging.

but who would sit and judge each players worth? i hope you're not suggesting the staff do, cause then griefing, mods, hacks and glitches etc would run wild! they wouldn't have time for anything else!

On the vip idea, i knida like it, but maybe there should be a cap on the number of vip's on at a time to stop everyone donating just for a tag? cause a, thats not what donating's all about, and b,having a vip cap too reduces the likeness to a whitelist, while still keeping some essence of it

Hold tab for a moment. Look at the connections. Over 97% is 3 bars or under. Half of everyone playing is 1 bar.
I am the only one with 5 bars and awesumepiggy is the only one with 4.

Crappy connection causes lots of lag. Everyone was blaming the server for being to weak. Really people just have terrible connections. I have almost no block lag at all.

Just look into that before you start complaining about lag.

Wait a minute, I have had 5 bars in connectiom strength for my whole minerealm career! Aside from this correction, I agree with jailbird, I have only come across block lag once, and that was long ago with my first realm. Certainly spme people may not have a 5 bar connection, but as jailbird said, its not the server's fault.

Herp derp for the third time, we've been over this, the tab function shows your connectivity to other players, not the server. Please read the thread before posting. :evil:

Also, there is no way you've only experienced block lag once on the server. Do you know what block lag is...?

The solution you guys offer is cutting out a change for many people to play and for new players to also join the server.

I understand where you guys are coming from, but minerealm has always had problems with handling high player counts. Rather than just decreasing the player limit a more permanent solution should be looked into, like optimization of the servers plugins or upgrading the server. I know that both of these solutions require Intelli's help and/or money, but start requesting Intelli to do these now and get enough people to follow you and he will most likely listen.

As for me I try to avoid the server during peak hours of traffic.

This. Lag isn't an issue if you're just out exploring, but if you're trying to build, it's not difficult to find a time when lag is at a minimum.

jdankk, we don't need these new players joining as often as they do, and besides there is plenty of time during the UK day when the server is at 40 players, and quite often, well below that. so i support the limit to the max!

oh and The_Jack_Deck, sounds like what you're thinking of is a chunk not loading, or loading after you get there! i don't think its block lag as i suspect you have seen that a lot. block lag is, fyi, where you mine or place a block, and it takes either:
1. seconds to disappear/appear
2. requires several attempts to place/remove
3. disappears/appears for a second before reverting, and then going back to its new state
This will always occur during high traffic times, as the server will be very busy

Incorrect. A maximum player limit is not any more hindering to new players than regulars.

I absolutely support a maximum player limit. I will give Minerealm Anniversary as an example: We had VIP slots, and although I didn't have one I was still able to log on to the server. Sure, it took me a good ten minutes to wait for a slot to open up; however, I was patient and determined to play. Therefore, I would go so far as to say that those who are more determined to play on Minerealm will be patient. However, those less serious will not be.

The same can be said for how it is now. Those who are determined to play will do so with block lag. However, the problem here is that block lag affects everyone...whether you are a determined player or not. Imposing a limit allows those that are determined to play and be patient have a better Minerealm experience.
