I was reading Aelcalan's post, and he's got it. We don't need to mine out the entire realm for diamonds. We only need to mine out from approximately level 16-0.
Let's say that it does take around 10 hours to mine a realm completely to bedrock.
(I have no clue how you came up with this number especially because the distribution of mass differs between realms)
However, lets say that it takes 10 hours to mine a 50x50x70 realm.
In that case it takes (16/70)*10 = 2.3 hrs per realm.
2.3 hrs * 38000 = 87400. This is an incredibly less amount of man-hours than we had before.
You can calculate "days of work for each person", but it doesn't really give you the amount of time it would take.
Instead, you can look at the average amount of players over a period of time on the server.
Let's say that over a month the average number of users online is around 60 or so.
Then it would still take two months to mine out all the diamonds.
(However, these calculations don't actually mean much. If I'm mining diamonds, I don't strip mine that's for sure. I definitely do branch mine though)
In the case of branch mining, since there is an efficiency of around 2.25. Then You can say that it would take even less than 2.3 hrs for 16 levels at branch mining. However, since that comes out to approximately only 1 hour, then I'm guessing our original figure of 10 hours per realm is underestimating a bit. I'm thinking it takes longer personally.
EDIT: I found in a case study that it took approximately 304.9 stone mined per diamond block. Diamonds usually occur in chunks of 4 or more, unless they generate close to gravel or dirt. Then you get the 1x2 blocks usually.. Consider this as you will)
