Sand would probably be better if there's any near you. Just generally safer not going to the nether.

If there's no sand near you, dirt isn't a bad option. It still digs fast with just stone shovels. 12-14 will fill your inventory. You'll need to fill your inventory about 5 times to make that much. If you get on at a good time with low block lag you can probably do that in just a few hours with sand.

This works especially well if you have a realm hollowed out for a specific purpose. Hollowed out areas with multiple floors left in and a ladder connecting them can be very helpful as mushroom farms and (if you can provide enough light) wheat farms. You'll get easy RCs, it won't feel like mindless drudgery since you're working towards creating specific structures, and you'll get useful crops from it after you're finished.

That's what I did for my first realm. I just chose a spot and started digging. It was pretty close to spawn and looked like a scrap yard from everyone who came past digging randomly in it. I think I dug down 7 layers or so below sea level so now I have like a 50x50 underground room. It was also mostly sand and sandstone so I built some glass structures. The only issue I had was having my stuff stolen because I didn't have enough sense to hide my chests. And once I had enough creds, I bought my time and effort with my time and effort.
