Aliens found out that the scientist was making large jumps at getting close to time travel. They knew this would result in their demise. They sent an alien assassain to kill him and shot him before the gun was finished.
The riddle does include information that couldn't be possible if the rest of it is true. Some of the riddle is a lie.
