Anything that grows or spreads automatically, will only do so when the chunk it is located in is loaded into memory. If you notice when you walk around or rotate, you'll see that land will appear and disappear around you, at a distance. I think this has to do with what your render distance is set at. The larger the render distance, the more chunks you have running on your computer at one time. This also causes the game to slow down if your computer's too slow and if the render distance is set too high. It becomes choppy primarily when you're walking because chunks are constantly being loaded and deleted to and from memory. The game has to create chunks as well that have never been loaded before. Though, all chunks on the minerealm survival server have already been rendered.
A chunk is a volume with length 16, width 16, and the full 128 height. This does not mean you must be 16 blocks from the plant. It depends not he render distance. If you can see the wheat from where you're standing, it should grow.
If you want your wheat or trees to grow, set your player by the plants and wait AFK (away from keyboard). I'm not sure how long wheat takes to grow. It grows at random times.
Also, plants will grown if another player is in the chunk's vicinity. So, you can ask a friend to wait by for the wheat to grow. Or if you're situated in a plot next to a plot with an active player, you may be able to return in a day with your wheat fully grown.
