Correct. Derivatives of Minecraft need permission to be published.

Because of copyright, everything Minecraft related is theirs.

What You Can Do
If you've bought the game, you may play around with it and modify it. We'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changes.
Any tools you write for the game from scratch belongs to you. You're free to do whatever you want with screenshots and videos of the game, but don't just rip art resources and pass them around, that's no fun. Plugins for the game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, including selling them for money. We reserve the final say regarding what constitutes a tool/plugin and what doesn't.

It says nothing about guides being sold for money in there, so you would have to get permission to publish it.

EDIT: So does everyone want to be kept up-to-date on my progress? I'd prefer to use Google+, but if there's something else you want me to use just let me know.

For realzees. Anyway, if you have a gmail account you pretty much have a Google+ account. And iirc you don't need to setup a phone number on gmail to use Google+, they just suggest it. Think about it, there's thousands of people out there without phones and they have Facebook and Google+ and whatnot.

The reason I need a phone is to make a new fake-age account. Without one, I can't verify my account... My current Google account is with my real age (14) and it won't let me use Google+.

Well, Jailbird556 and I have twitter accounts, not sure about the rest of the community though.

But I think Twitter would be much better to use because people who don't have G+ accounts and can't get them can track the progress of your guide.

Or you could do a word of notch style tumblr blog? Not that I have tumblr, but that is viewable by anyone, even without an account.

No offense intended, but I don't think people will want to buy a strategy guide that costs as much as the video game itself. especially when they most likely have good friends who already know how to play the game. I just don't see it. A guide to Minecraft would be a great addition to the many mods/guides/videos and such, but it is more convenient for a Minecraft player to turn to IGN, Gamespot, Machinima, and many other online video guides, which are not just professional,(i am not saying you are not a pro, but all of the people i listed spend half their time playing video games, and can come up with a guide just as good.) but free. Now don't think I am trying to discourage you from making money off Minecraft, but i don't think this will work out.
