Kress is lying, if you do that it will kill your computer completely. By "double" I assume you mean make two 1.7.3 jars, right? Just copy and paste it, then update one of them to 1.8. To get to the .minecraft folder, if you're on Windows, press the windows key + R then type %appdata%, go the the .minecraft>bin>1.7.3 jar.
