To join, you must live in the North ( - x coordinate)
The benefits are simple: You get to know your neighbors better, so your never too isolated. Also, trading with neighbors that you get to know allows safer trading/ not trading with a scamming stranger. Last, if the player wishes, the may have a subway hub station around their general area.

I have 4 Realms [Called: Roobeans TMs] all next each other the one which the Subway would go though is x-1075, z75.
The annoying thing is there is a realm in front of mine owned by Jwillrich who I have never seen on and they have ended the Northern Road there meaning I can't Carry it on because of there house being in the way...
KingofTurves spoke one time about it... I really want the road to continue through my Realms but it can't until Jwillrich logs on and makes a road...
I hope I can have a Subway Stop =]

Edit - In the meantime you can always prep a road and tunnel in your realm, just make them line up propperly.
