This doesn't have to be about SMP, just anything you did in Minecraft that, when you look back on it, was very noobish. I'll start.
-For about the first month when I was starting out, I was convinced the only way to swim was to mash the Spacebar key, and that the harder you pressed it the more efficiently your guy would swim. This made gameplay very intense, especially when I tried to cross vast oceans. It would actually get very tiring to the point where I have to rest and almost drown :o.
-I also assumed after witnessing the physics of Sand and Gravel, that you needed to adequately support your structures or else they would collapse. I had support beams and columns up the yin yang.
