Every so often, we hear hints or a bit of info about future Minecraft or MineRealm updates. Here's the place to discuss them!

To start us off:

@Dinnerbone wrote:I do have an Ultimate Plan™ with endermites, but it will wait. May also include dragon egg but I haven't discussed this with the team yet.
Obviously, anything that has to do with the dragon egg is exciting news, especially if it involves an Ultimate Plan™. But in what way could Endermites interact with a dragon egg? Could they cause it to hatch in some way? Or perhaps it could be a separate Endermite behavior that happens to influence the dragon egg in some way: after all, he said it may include the dragon egg, which implies that it's a phenomenon that could occur with or without the egg.

(For the uninformed, Endermites are like Silverfish that deal a heart of damage and occasionally spawn when an Enderman teleports, or a player uses an Ender pearl. They were added in 1.8.)

[19:47:38] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] VVolfie: My best guess would be a wild update ;P.
[19:47:50] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] Chiqadee: Public land wipes aren't taken lightly. Either a wild update or insertion of ores is more likely.
[19:47:51] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] VVolfie: Unlikely there will be a public land wipe having had one so recently.
[19:48:37] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] VVolfie: I'd enjoy another public land wip personally. Though I can only imagine how the map would look xD.
[19:48:54] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] Chiqadee: I might end up with something other than deep ocean =D.
[19:49:03] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] LeafWarrior254: Lol, I remember the first wipe, I got half of a mountain range.

[19:50:53] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] CubanRiot: Well then how are you going to insert the new things into mine realm? if you will.
[19:52:30] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] VVolfie: We're gonna make giant mechs that you can summon and pay them for the new blocks.

[19:52:37] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] VVolfie: We'll call them the plot bots.
[19:53:43] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] CubanRiot: There is not much nether quartz left, that I have seen.
[19:53:51] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] VVolfie: The guardians only spawn in ocean uh temple things.
[19:53:59] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] Intelli: Prismarine can be crafted with prismarine shards.
[19:54:07] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] Intelli: Prismarine shards can be obtained from guardians.
[19:54:07] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] LeafWarrior254: I remember an EthosLab video where he found out that guardians spawned in a river in previously.
[19:54:12] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] LeafWarrior254: Generated land.
[19:54:23] [Client thread/INFO]: [CHAT] [Staff] Intelli: Ocean monuments will generate in existing oceans if players haven't built there.
What's wrong with inserting the new stone types? Wherever there's a new stone block on the 1.8 seed and if the same block is stone and on public land on minerealm, move the new block over. Just like the quartz. Unless you think iterating through the entire map would take too long (128 times longer than the nether).

Wolfe and Mojang need to finish their handbag fight before we get anywhere near 1.8
For those of you who don’t know me, I am Ryan Morrison, or “VideoGameAttorney” on Reddit. I have spent countless hours over in the gamedev subreddit helping the gaming community get informed and know their rights. As such, when I see one of “the little guys” trampled on, it really makes me lose my temper.
There are few more passionate people in the industry than those who spend their time modding and working on open source software. They know they aren’t doing it for money or recognition; they’re doing it because they love it. So when a company secretly buys a project and doesn’t tell those programmers toiling away on open source projects that they’re now effectively working as free labor, that company is playing with fire.
I have received a lot of emails about Wesley Wolfe and Mojang, and nearly all of them referred to one of the various licenses involved in this debacle. I’ve heard arguments that all of Minecraft is open source now, and I’ve heard Wesley is Hitler’s reincarnation coming to doom all those who dare to craft or mine. Neither is true, at all. Minecraft owns its code, and there is no magical license on the internet or accidental involvement on a project that changes that. In the same regard, Wesley is not doing anything shady or underhanded, he too owns his code and has every right to have it treated as he would like.
A license is a contract. There are many reasons why a contract would be void, and many conditions that make a contract invalid from the get-go. One such condition is being “tricked” into the agreement, which would include agreeing to work on a project under false pretenses. As stated above, an open source project being secretly purchased by a company, in hopes to have that company’s game be improved through it, is as close to a loophole for free labor as you will find. Free labor was outlawed in this country a while ago. We had a whole war about it.
Further, while the arguments that Minecraft is open source are ridiculous, what’s not ridiculous is that the use of Mojang’s code in the projects under a GPL would negate the entire GPL on that project. I can’t create an open source project off one of Blizzard’s games, for example, so why does anyone think it’s different here?
Finally, if I draw a picture of Mickey Mouse, that’s infringement. Disney can come after me and make me take it down or stop using it in whatever I am. But Disney cannot claim ownership over my drawing of Mickey. That’s still mine, even if I can’t use it. So here, if Wesley’s entire code library was infringing, Mojang can make him take it down. But Wesley still owns that infringing code and he can also take it down or, more importantly, tell others to take it down as well. Mojang can’t claim ownership of his code just because it might have infringed on their IP. They can just make him take it down.
There will be many headlines about this in coming weeks. There will be a lot of wild theories and arguments from both sides. But at the end of the day, don’t just believe one side is “good” and the other “bad” here. These things are rarely so simple.

Spigot's now capable of releasing updates on top of the most recent spigot.jar through binary patching: http://www.spigotmc.org/threads/spigot- ... 09a.29091/

And if there's nothing stopping spigot, someone with enough spunk could continue to release craftbukkit updates. Although, it would not be open source. Therefore, spigot could not properly incorporate craftbukkit changes without tedious decompiling.

So, Bukkit isn't going to be updated because the Bukkit staff quit? Or...what?

Re: the new stone types, what I'd do if I were Intelli is do something similar to the quartz replacement. I'd splice the new blocks into the map, but I would only place them where stone already is. If the stone in that place had already been mined, and there was air or something else there, it would not be replaced. It might also make sense to restrict it to public realms, perhaps with an option to enable it for private realms.

Unrelated: Oh nooooo

And apparently Notch is going to quit if the deal goes through.

God forbidd microsoft buys this. I know they wouldnt let oepn codes and mods ect to be distrubuted. Their not mod frinedly unlike Mojang. I love Minerealm and would love to play here more but Id be even more torn by the fact I cant play a super magic based chaellening mod pack. And whos the bukkit guy who apperntly quit? I cant really get into this much my school wifi blocks a lot of links. I dont relaly know if Jeb being the new head of MInecraft is bad orr good. Will he keep the updates slow paced or add a lot of hard to deal with mobs and craftable machines. Like Im looking forward to seeing wat hell add just as long as it adds a challenge and will Have like trophies like when you kill a boss. ei draogn or wither itll drop its head for you to display. Also machines powered by geothremal heat. ANd a moon. I know this is a slim as heck chance but I want more dimentions and machines ect to vanilla.

Such a strange time for microsoft to offer. Or maybe not... Maybe they feel mojang is more likely to sell with the goings on (or off) with bukkit.

So the story with bukkit goes like this: mojang's EULA (the agreement you make when you buy the game) is updated. EvilSeph, lead of bukkit, announces that he's halting bukkit development for good because of the EULA update. Jeb tweets that mojang owns bukkit and it is not EvilSeph's to shut down. Dinnerbone, previous Bukkit developer and now mojang employee, tweets that he'll update bukkit to 1.8 on his own free time (after all, bukkit is an open source project and dinnerbone has the know how to update it). Wolvereness, previous bukkit developer, gets mad at all this and issues a DMCA take down request on craftbukkit and forks. That is, bukkit can no longer be distributed and the source is not publicly available. The only legal jars and source exist in private repos downloaded from before the take down. Mojang makes a statement that they have no problem with bukkit and wish that it remains independent from mojang. They say it contains no copyrighted source code (which tells me the licenses protecting craftbukkit have not been violated).

A large portion of bukkit devs and the support team have quit as well. That's either an opportunity for some other people to step up to the plate or an end to a beautiful thing.

We don't know why Wolvereness issued the take down or if it has any legal backing. Nonetheless, people will speculate like crazy on forums and reddits everywhere.

How terrible.

Re: the EULA changes, I read an article on Mojang.com about it (here's a follow up). It would seem that selling credits for IRL money is now not only prohibited by server rules, but quite literally illegal, although the extent to which Mojang will actually be able to enforce their EULA is debatable, given the enormous number of Minecraft servers out there, and the relatively unknown status of many of them.

That would also mean that the rank-selling systems that certain servers use is not permitted, but there are still plenty out there that do it, despite the deadline being August 1st. It's a good thing that MineRealm doesn't do any of the things explicitly prohibited by the new EULA: it would seem that Intelli's conventions line up with Mojang's ideas. Just goes to show you why MineRealm has been so successful.

As for the Bukkit crew, perhaps they worry that it's skirting to close to Free-To-Play and oppose that for philosophical reasons (although it seems that Mojang is trying quite deliberately to avoid that), or that people will start making Bukkit plugins and charging to use any server with said plugin, which could get pretty messy for Bukkit, legally speaking, if someone decides that something that incorporates Bukkit violates the EULA. In any case, we can hope that they release the code to Mojang and allow development to continue; else, we might end up with (worst case) no way at all to use already-made plugins and have to remake them entirely within a different system or abandon them, or at least (best case) have to wait quite a while before they can be used.
