Have you ever seen diamond ore, gone to mine it only to find out there is lava underneath to burn it?

I have done that once or twice. A very disappointing experience.

It happens to me every run. I avoid losing diamond because I almost always mine around, on top, and under them. If I see lava I use my handy dandy water bucket!

Makes me think of the custom worlds in the snapshot where I set ores to max everything for spawning and there is no stone, only ore.

I didn't even know that was an option.

but how would you ever get any ores past coal?

set the spawn height for everything to 255 and max sizes and spawn chances, then some stuff will push out the coal.
Actually, getting coal is an issue. I keep finding diamond, redstone and gold when looking for coal and iron.

@Dentez: In the snapshot version, when making a new world, scroll through world types until you reach 'custom'. THen do whatever you want in the customization menu.
