what would one open said logs with?

I use 7zip to open them with. You can get it at either the main website http://www.7-zip.org or at my personal favorite site http://www.ninite.com .

I'm pretty sure you can run Windows 7 apps on Windows 8 because I have 7-zip and Windows 8 and it works fine. Also tried it out last night and it works.

And just to point out the massive flaw in your argument, there is no way to detect this is being used so who's to say "we people" haven't been using it since day one.

Using your logic players shouldn't be allowed on the server full stop as minecraft itself is very easy to modify/cheat.
