Let me start off by saying that I understand the idea behind this. I think its a great way for new players to get a start in the game. I remember the first realm I bought here.. I hid my stuff in the side of a mountain until I got enough credits to purchase. I personally found that fun but not everyone thinks that way and that's fine.
I think the rule can be abused by established players. It seems like once you have enough credits to buy a few realms you should lose this privilege. Perhaps the exception would be if you have a large build in mind and wanted to mark a placeholder to make sure no one ruins your idea. But it should only be a temporary thing with a time limit. I can make a stack of signs a lot faster than I could ever acquire 160,000 credits to actually claim those plots.
What spurred this post was my recent exploration of the mesa biome. I bought 11 plots there with the intent of preservation. And of course to get clay, but I'm only taking from the inside and no one will ever see that. Someone decided to take all the red sand from the public plots they couldn't buy, so I was exploring to find some to restore mine. I found a public plot in a damaged area that had red sand, so I started mining it. But I found a sign saying "Claimed by: [name]". After I put the it back I found two more signs (in different plots) by this same person.
I assumed it was someone who just wanted a few plots in the mesa but didn't have the credits to buy them.. until I walked to the next plot and saw it was owned by that same person. And it had "Mesa 18" as the MOTD, with 16 and 17 beside it. It seems to me that if you have 180,000 credits to claim 18 plots in a area, you shouldn't be able to take anymore with signs. There were two public plots adjacent to the 11 I bought, and I never even considered "claiming" those. It seems like an abuse of the rule. I think having a more defined rule would prevent this kind of land grabbing.
