A computer with an i5-3550, GTX 670 and an SSD(quoting my own specs here) shouldn't lag like I just opened 3 instances of Crysis 3 when travelling to the nether.

Then we have the problem I've had, not once but several times over the years, of being pushed into the Nether after forced to go AFK. That is mostly my problem with being able to be killed, because if you're thrown in without consent then you lose everything you have whether or not you meant to go.

Some people need to enter the nether to travel to places, since they don't always feel like travelling 2k+ blocks time-to-time. And to what Final said, sadly people are and will continue to forget you can enter the nether spawn from other tunnels, not just the spawn one.

As far as I know, you cannot push people in Minecraft (or at least Minerealm) anymore.

I afk'd at spawn, rejoined to see netherrack and the 'You Died!' message.
I was dead-center at spawn. Someone must've had a real big grudge and many snowballs.

I like it the way it is. It creates a danger that is found no-where else on the server. If you want to enter the nether without being unfairly killed, enter another portal elsewhere. Otherwise, suit up and kill the bastards trying to take your stuff.
