When I clicked on multiplayer, it said pinging under this server and it would not allow for me to connect.
What should I do to resolve this problem?

Are you in 1.6.4, or are you playing on 1.7.2?

When you open minecraft launcher, click edit profile at the bottom left corner, then where the drop down is for use version, open it and select 1.6.4 then save
