I have to say that is probably one of the strangest explanations given so far.
Let me get this right, you made the choice to dislike something, just because a friend likes it?

I'm trying to remember if I've ever been in a similar situation, but I can't think of one.
Perhaps a situation where friends support different sports teams and want you to pick a side?
To which my reply is neither, because I refuse to support something I have no great interest or understanding of.
Perhaps in terms of popularity, I wasn't a fan of The Simpsons when it first made a big splash in marketing.
Which could be a thing of disliking something just because it seemed popular.
Wasn't for a few years until it moved from satellite to BBC2 and I could actually sit down and watch it and I enjoyed it immensely. I felt a bit silly for judging something on it's appearance, rather than through watching it.
If you dislike something because it is popular, then you are letting Pop culture dictate your tastes.
