I was in the nether mining for some nether quartz ore when I saw a floating bottle, so I took off toward the nether spawn portal. I made it to the portal and then was attacked and killed inside the portal. It kind of frustrated me because that seemed pretty cheap, so I looked at the forums and found this.

If they are inside the portal area, you are not allowed to kill them.

I then copied the link and pasted it in the chat and told everyone to look at it, announcing that killing someone inside the portal was bannable. Right after that, I went back into the nether and was killed by Cephyrian inside the portal. When he hit me it knocked me out of the portal, but I feel like that is still not allowed.

That's an old rule that was removed. To quote Intelli, "If you can PVP, you're allowed to." Or something like that. Where you were is irrelevant.

Ceph doesn't use Knockback, you must have walked.

Interesting - I hadn't picked up on that post in the Official Rules thread, but I can confirm that recent Staff opinion in in-game chat has been that while you are in the nether, you can be killed - including in the portal.

Yes clearly I would purposefully walk out of the portal so that I would get killed. What sense does that make frosty, really? And thank you dlgn and teejay, I didn't see that.

This is why I need to re-update the rule thread and remove all comments. What kero said in that post was back when portal camping used to be against the rules. So in the context you are reading it is just a misunderstanding.

Does portal camping include; chasing someone to a portal and killing them whilst they attempt to escape in the portal?
This did happen to me.

If they are inside the portal area, you are not allowed to kill them.

In short it doesn't apply anymore.

This is why I don't go in the nether much, especially near spawn.
People use cheap tactics then dare to call it PVP.....
