Well then I don't know what's going on. I've NEVER had pvp on when I cured my villagers. I keep saying this so someone does not get jumped while they are curing villagers. But if it's the only way other players can do so then so be it.

I also have never cured a zombie villager with PVP on. I cannot get the splash potion to work unless the zombie is in a dark room and it is 3x3 (the floor) AND I am above them. The /pvp trick is interesting because maybe I can do so in other circumstances. Hope this helps.

I've wasted lots of potions before I learned about the /pvp, then it worked fine with me.
Later I put a dispenser in my get-yourself-a-villager-system, now I dont have to worry about it anymore. Dispensers dont care about pvp.

I hear ya, same happened to me, wasted like 10 potions until I finally asked in chat

So, this was my experience too, with my second villager. I probably wasted about 20 potions before I asked in chat. /pvp fixed it immediately.

However, I actually managed to convert my first villager without this. (Probably the reason I was so wastefully persistent with the second). So, I'm guessing that maybe I stood further away the first time.

Like others said stand a couple tiles away then toss the weakness potion. Helps to have clean line of sight too. I used a fence to keep it in and then tossed it at the ground right beside it. Without pvp enabled.

It is

It's a very neat design that Darelle built - you grind as normal until you have a zombie villager in the mix, then hit a switch that opens a piston door and turns on a sideways water flow. That flushes the mobs into a 1 block wide side corridor that has the top block open. Once the zombie villager is in there, you hit the switch again to turn off the flow, kill the normal zombies in the side corridor (via the open top block) leaving you with only the zombie villager.

You then hit a button which streams him into a 1x1 chamber with his feet exposed, and a dispenser then throws the potion at him. You feed him a golden apple, wait for him to change, then press another button and he is water streamed out into a collection corridor with a railway ready to take him to the villager storage zone. Extremely efficient and low fuss.

Just for what it's worth - I have tried without /pvp on and had no success, whereas with /pvp on it has worked every time. I have also told many players in chat who were asking why their potions weren't working to turn on /pvp first, and their next potion has worked. I can't speak for those who don't need /pvp on but there is a significant proportion of players who seem to require it.
