Okay, so login was down the other day, and I was bored. So I decided to go play SP, which I never do. Anyway, I got to building just for the heck of it, even though I can't build to save my life. Maybe I've been staring at the Arcane Orb too long :P.

Anyway, I built this. It's a Church of the Temple of the Black Night. It's also, in my two years of playing Minecraft, the first thing other than a hole in the wall or a hut that I've ever built. What do you guys think?

Well, my structures aren't nearly as grand or impressive as some of the other projects on minerealm. I have so many plain/boring walls. You shouldn't feel bad about being only able to build mediocrity either. :P

First, I know for a fact many great builders will begin a project by choosing 3 to 7 blocks which complement each other. They set these blocks aside as the only blocks they will use and ignore all others. Block choice is very important. Using too few is too plain and using too many is too overwhelming. Advanced builders will even have a sense of combining "warm" blocks with "cool" blocks. I've even seen heated discussion over using jungle planks instead of oak.

With the default texture pack, building with resource blocks (diamond, gold, iron, emerald, redstone) in large quantities will rarely look appealing. Use them sparingly.

Second, having an ideal shape in mind is important. If it's too detailed and elaborate, it looks less like something and more like nothing. You can pick a basic shape, but not too basic. Think 3D. If you build a wall, don't throw in random blocks for "detail." Add interesting, possibly curvy patterns, and add indentations in the wall. The floor does not necessarily need to be flat either. Try picking a shape that resembles a real-life building, not something random you whipped up. Big is better. Big is impressive. Be sure the theme you pick is constant throughout the build.

Third, sometimes symmetry is ugly and boring.

Forth, before you begin, and when you're finished, you should be able to give your build a simple and unique name. Your response should not be, "What the hell did I just build?"

If this advice doesn't help, don't fret. Probably like me, you learn by example. Building great things often doesn't come naturally.

I don't know what everyone is going on about, I like it.
Could use some touch ups, a little decoration on the side to make it less a box, different shape, maybe, something more on the top, but that's just me.
Yeah, it's not huge and spectacular, but for a
first thing other than a hole in the wall or a hut that I've ever built.
it looks pretty good.

Thanks for the advice, Eah. Yeah, I didn't put too much thought into it at the beginning. As for the things in the wall, though, some of them are windows, and the others are portraits that represent Her Darkness (obby in glowstone), Kefkaroth (glowstone in obby), Lapos (lapis, obviously), and Creethulu (RS blocks are red like fire). And, once again, thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

Yeah, it isn't the most exciting thing in the world. At least it isn't as ugly as some of the things I've tried to build before xD
