I think that this idea should be implemented to the next update. Recently, my semi-automatic farms have been abused. The problem is that players who are not even in your realm can press buttons and activate them. That being said, I believe that we should have an option to allow certain players to use buttons in certain realms. If this is implemented, no one can bother my farms and I can live peacefully.

Anyone that has played Minecraft long enough knows how to secure their buttons or entire building when required. The suggestion, as is, breaks public buttons, subways, melon farms, etc. Secondly there is no granularity of control for specific buttons which means buttons would inherit perms from the realm, unless a completely new permission system was codded.

I understand where the idea is coming from but once you learn to build better, it is completely unnecessary to have this added complexity to the server.

You can always search Youtube for ideas, my technique is actually just to have the button in the open, but visually obscured in such a way casually exploring peeps are not going to notice it. For example using a ceiling with inlaid lighting you can place a button\lever at an edge... this works because almost no one ever looks up and even less so up and behind. You can also aesthetically make buttons part of a build and just so happens one of the buttons actually does something. Security by obscurity works well in Minecraft, obviously though if something needs to be absolutely secure make it impossible to enter/use.

Never tried this one out but looks neat

Redstone chests do pretty much what you're suggesting. When in a protected realm, only realm users can activate them. They power the block below them. If you need to replicate a lever, you can use something like this: (single door redstone lock) http://ubuntuone.com/2mUu296HWSP25Cnp248Ks9 or this: (double door redstone lock) http://ubuntuone.com/2lNOmeUBlm1g0rWLjDHZyw It's a world download to an example I made awhile ago.

There was a suggestion quite a while ago (which I believe was accepted) which was pretty much the idea of making them toggle-able or only usable by realm members, I believe.

I believe it was suggested by Intelli himself, accepted, left for a long while, then rejected due to the difficulty of implementing it.

Yeah I would imagine, just thinking about the idea in my own head as a coding problem... it would be a nightmare.
