My personal take on the Vocaloids is that they are a very, very neat concept, and are potentially a pretty big innovation in synthetic speech. In practice, however, they don't "perform" very well, and the songs themselves are frequently a mixed bag due to so many amateur creators being enabled to produce content. Still, some good stuff crops up from time to time.
