Well most of the surface quartz has been mined already. As for what's beneath the surface, I've actually found that it's very difficult to find. I've heard it's as abundant as coal but I'm finding it less often than I would even find diamonds.
Same here guys, I spent around 2 hours (give or take) and only came up with 2 stacks.
No way it this more common or as common as coal or even iron for that matter.

It's just the craze. It's a new item to MineRealm, and many players have been looking forward to it for a while. Add to that the fact that it's only available in the nether, where PVP-averse players may be reluctant to spend much time, and it becomes fairly reasonable for some people to be willing to pay a premium for quartz.

I expect the prices to drop substantially once everyone who wants some quartz gets their hands on at least a little bit of it... a single stack of quartz ore, if mined with a fortune III pick, can provide quartz pieces for as many light sensors and comparators as most people are likely to want, with some left over for occasional use as a building material.

Edit:
With regard to the comments about how it seems more rare than it should be, I would note that huge amounts of quartz were mined in the first day after its release. Much of the surface quartz supply was likely taken by the 20-some players who were on right after the release or others who logged on the next morning. In some cases, where large areas of netherrack had been mined away in the past, multiple large veins of quartz were spawned floating above the ground in easily accessible positions. tl;dr quartz is plentiful but the easiest parts to get were gone quickly.

I think if the map size was 1250x1250 and iron became magically in demand a similar thing would happen.

2 hours can get me at least 5 stacks of ore. It's all about finding untouched places.

Thanks for that explanation, jack, you were very helpful.
The problem is, now I'm not so much wondering as to the price, I understand that people are willing to pay more and that the economy is unstable. However, what I don't get is why people are so willing to pay 3k for this stack of ore when it would be far cheaper and probably more efficient to go and mine it out themselves. As I said, it's quite abundant.
Not only is it more economical (and in my opinion fun) to go mine it out of the nether yourself, but there are also lots of credits to be had if you have an efficiency pick.

^^^^
This.

Ore is selling around 3k per stack at the moment.
I'm making that in the time it takes me to find the flaming stuff :D

The reason it seems like there's less buried quartz is that it's spread over a larger vertical area than the overworld ores. Also, as an XP farming source, quartz ore only works once, so it's not exactly sustainable.
