kerovon wrote:I just thought I'd bring up another problem with new player retention I've noticed, and write down my opinions on it. In short, you guys mostly treat new players poorly.

I've seen new players come in, and ask questions that are ignored. I've seen long term players lie to new players after a question is asked. Sure, you may have heard 15 new players ask that question today, and think you are being clever, but they don't know that. It just serves to confuse them.

I've seen new player offer 100 credits for two iron, and rather than have people tell them that they are overpaying, you people race to see who can be the first to profit from that deal.

These aren't just isolated incidents. By and large, new players are not treated well, so they are less likely to stay.

So what can be done to improve player retention (assuming that is the goal)? I'll give an example I've been doing for a while now. I had a couple new players set up shop in my little corner of nowhere, and start building. Rather than try to get rid of them, I chatted with them for a bit. I then bought the realm they were on, and sold it to them for 1 credit. I then gave them access to my warehouse and told them to not go too extravagant with the diamonds. As a result, I have some nice buildings made by friendly players in my zone. Sure, I may be down a stack or so of diamonds, and my brick supplies are heavily depleted, but so what? I have gained more by being helpful to the new players than I would have lost.

If you want to encourage new players, and to shape them into competent members of the community, you need to help them. One possibility that might work is to get together a group of older players, and make a city and guild primarily for newer players. Let them join, and have a plot in a private realm for a while. That way, they will be able to get a foothold and become established with a support net, before they head off on their own. If they get a month, they can make friends, and earn the credits to buy a realm of their own. A lot of them come in asking for friends. If there is a guild with a bunch of new players, who are all lacking friends, then they will be able to self sort into their own cliques, and when they head off to claim their own area, they will have friends who go with them. As long as older players are involved as mentors in that city, it seems like that would help get more players into minerealm, and integrated into the minerealm community.
I feel guilty now.

I'm going to be nicer to good noobs. And also meaner to evil ones.

And I'm going to get artraf to get going with United Noobs, his guild which was designed to be a noob haven but never got going because the base is on the map edge and he hardly ever plays. I'll get him started again.

And whoever said guilds aren't worth much, I'm quite close to my guildees, and we work together as a group and pool our resources.

hey... i resent that :( i found the server from one of said videos and never asked for op nor have i ever broken a rule not to mention im active and chat often and give things away for free to people in need of it if i have.

and instead of sitting around twiddling my thumbs i make things, mine, enchant, merch, ect and am a productive member of this community :(
I don't think you are referring to the same set of videos. Unless you came here to grief the server after getting your free 100 diamonds and OP after saying a "code word" in chat that was added to the swear filter :P

acc hit like instead of quote...

anyway actually i was referring to the idiot we won't name 's video lol i seen it and knew he was a idiot so i joined to see what it really was like. i take things with a grain of salt so to speak one of the good things about ageing :) glad i did tho

There are many problems, as I see it, Minerealm is dying because of a lack of change. Minecraft is changing while Minerealm is not.

Like It was mentioned in the original post, guilds are essentially useless, they are nothing but a title under which your realms exist. The country system proposed months ago would have added an interesting meta game to the server, but that never happened.

Personally, I have very little to work for on Minerealm. At one point I was talking with many other true vets about what we could change for the better, the problem was we knew that changes the the server itself would almost never happen so we attempted to take it into out own hands and build a community city. Then we realised how truly counterintuitive the realm system actually is. As a form of protection it's perfect, but as a form of creating communities it's just... Stupid. It pulls people apart, many things such as tax makes it much more efficient to work as a lone wolf than together and it creates trust issues when playing with randoms.

It isn't entirely minerealm fault, I'd still put it as the best server out there if your after a legit survival experience, I'm just sick of minecraft, probably like many other older players

It's the perfect server for a small group of irl friends working together to make a small town... Anything much more aspirational than that becomes a mess, which is a true shame.

Issues in list form:
  • Realms kinda suck
    Small map
    Old nether
Easy to obtain resources practically impossible to get (glowstone, endstone, quartz*, etc.
Trust issues - no ability to assign chest permissions
Community storage is very risky and only works with irl friends
No such thing as a good looking public city
No efficient system for large groups (guilds lack good management, realms lack specific permissions)

A good way to create some more cohesiveness between the community members is reverting back to the 2.0 realm system. The 3.0 system allows more freedom as you can simply buy the areas you need no matter where they are located geographically. The great thing about 2.0 was it forced players to congregate within the realms boundaries regardless if it was an early 50x50 realm or it was an expansive 300x300. Players had that sense of community that some believe we are currently missing now. The 2.0 system was all about working together to continuously expand your realm as appose to the system now where people can easily just hoard their own credits and buy individual realms. Of course, if the 2.0 system was to be re-instated, there would need to be certain changes. For example, a way to make it so that you couldn't immediately create a realm for free, as in 2.0 this created the problem hundreds of small 30x30 realms scattered around the place. Perhaps it could still cost 10,000 credits but would follow the expansion in 2.0. As much as I preferred bartering, I also think that credits shouldn't be eliminated as the server has become accustom to an economy. An idea could be that instead of the only way to expand your realm being placing blocks within the boundaries, maybe you could allocate credits to also expand it... e.g. 5000 credits might count as 2500 blocks or something along those lines.

Now this is just my opinion, but frankly I thought the 2.0 system was perfect for the idea of realms.

WHOA! GUYS!

I agree with Intelli. Also the fate of Minerealm is the name me and MrKeveCool came up with to help stop 'you-know-who.'
It then went on from that to me and cubeguy314 making the battle of us and redkiller123's dragon.
That then went to "The Day The Dragon Came" which I am trying to make part 2 of currently.

So uuhh... Stupid title really. Thats why I clicked and it wasnt a thread by MrKeveCool :(

EDIT:

All some of you are making out is a big shiny ban and pointing out that we should start all over again?
I see where your going though. MineRealms been around for ages so much that new players cant find public land easily and leave. Then there is a teleporter that is tricky to find if your new/dumb.

But then again, think of redkillers dragon. Arcane. Vortex. Crafting city. Spawn city. All these builds would be gone.

I don't pvp myself, and to be honest have no interest in it either.
But I would say that PVP on MineRealm is a complete joke.
Camping the nether portal at spawn? Seriously, what skill is involved in that and what purpose does it serve other that to boost rankings/ego's. Because of this I, like others, completely avoid the nether spawn portal and that is sad as a lot of work has/had gone into that area.

There are many arenas throughout MR that could serve this purpose and make PVP a draw rather than a cheesy tactic. Why not use these to an advantage? Signposts at spawn notifying times & locations etc.
There are lots of new players (not saying I'm not a new player :D) asking for PVP so this would be a good thing.
Provide disposable armour, make it an even fight. I'm sure most of the older players can afford to supply iron armour for PVP use. Heck I'm happy to provide a repair service if this was to come.

Just my 2 cents

And that's why we Vortexians have stopped portal camping. Well, except in the instance of killing extremely rude nubs. Because we fought to regain our honour, and we don't want to lose it again.

Will losing a player from Vortex lose honor?
Players who leave don't lose honor as long as they are honorable in their parting, and Vortex loses no honor either. If Vortex isn't the right guild for them, then it isn't and they can try to find a better one.

But you know that already, of course, Dragon, being Vortexian.
