Buddy chat was implemented for this exact reason - you're not supposed to have every person on the server added to it.

Optionally, if you just want to talk to a set of 3 specific people, then you should be in a guild with them.

At any rate, this is just the party system, with the ability to be a member of multiple parties.

I agree...partially.

Once the new guild system is put in place, for us poorer folk, unless we are supported, being in a guild will be too expensive. I say abolish the buddy system and put this in instead.

Or.....use raptr/skype/Teamspeak2... there is a long list of other possibilities without having to add extra code to the game.

Doesn't raptr have the in-game overlay similar to steam? I haven't tried it as I know its still experimental.
Actually you could also add Minecraft to steam and use their overlay too
