Dragon, countries was neat, but I think it deserves its own server. I for one do not want my Risk with my Minecraft.
On to thoughts.
The reason the first survival map worked, I believe, is because of its enormity. The server, being so gargantuan, allowed for towns to be so spread out griefers never found them. I remember my town, Tinderbox, was off the map, so no one ever found it unless told where it was. Akatsuki_Member and I were it's founders basically, and we pulled in about four other friends, and it was awesome.
(Although I did burn my entire five story house down then... BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY.)
The server was awesome then because it really felt like a world. It had defining cultures, from nomadic desert people to towns folk to tribal master architects (did anyone see Hydro and B_Ran's cacti fortress?) The second map was good when the original map was corrupted, and held similar server sizes, but it still didn't have the beauty and amazing flare of the one with the first Tinderbox and Frogtown.
Essentially, I believe if you want to have a world without realms again, it needs to be just that. So massive it's a world, not a 5k by 5k server. And then shrink the map on the website back down to only cover the innards of the map; that's how it used to be, and it worked well.
So basically.
World without realms: Massive, with smaller map.
World with realms: Medium, with full map.
I absolutely loved the massive server, with the unmapped regions it held. It felt like an adventure, like I had to keep tabs on everything with my memory. And I did, and I got to where I could travel to Tinderbox without even looking at the map. It felt like an accomplishment every time I did it. It doesn't feel that way anymore, yet the protection the realm system offers is pretty sweet.
