I don't think this is a good idea, not only for the reasons stated prior to this post, but also because it has the potential to make areas look really bad. Think about mountain bioms. Someone earlier bought realms in this area, terraformed the entire thing (which is a stupid idea), then never cam back. If others explore the area (and place blocks) some realms will reset earlier or later than other ones, which would make it look like the remnants of the 4.0 wipe. Aesthetically, this would look terrible.

If this would be really implimented, and for example a complete hollow realm would be reseted, could minecraft continue saying: "Absolutely no items are ever spawned by staff"
well it is not directly by staff, but it would give additional items, like, as already mentioned, ores.
If someone thinks that a specific public realm isn't quite good-looking, then this one should just change it.

I think a more simple and vanilla solution to having public realms filled with abandoned/griefed structures is some kind of deconstruction permit system. Say a thread where players can post a picture and coordinates of the structure they wish to deconstruct/terraform, and staff can approve or deny at their leisure. I know I probably like a few other players wouldn't mind cleaning up the public areas around my realms, but don't out of caution that it might be considered griefing.

This makes sense to me, but may consume a lot of staff time to go through every post. Just a couple of days ago, I wanted to buy a realm which had what appeared to be an abandoned building on it. I asked Chubsy to come take a look, he went back through the logs and gave me the go-ahead to purchase it. It worked out perfectly, but things were pretty quiet on the server at the time.
