Edit: The name Aether came from the suggestions forums that Minecraft.net links to. It's called Skyworld obviously, but with a bit of hope, it will be called, by the name that many call it.

Nope. they function just like a door, but on the ground. The Minecraft Wiki has something on them with source links.

Pistons, however, can be used to make floodgates. Sticky pistons aren't in the mod, and I'm incredibly excited about them (check the piston MCWiki article for more on that). Sticky pistons pull as well as push, for those who don't want to look for the page.
