GINGre was being pretty bad, but IMO if people are banned for logging it should be less of a blanket rule and more on a player-by-player basis; i.e. If they abuse it a lot, they get banned, rather than they get banned for doing it at all. It's kind of like trolling, I guess: How much is okay is quite subjective, so each instance has to be dealt with individually by staff. In this case, GINGre was obviously abusing it, but there are other cases where I might, for instance, skulk around the nether, see a guy, attack him, then realize that I'm no match for him and log. It's really a matter of degree.
TL;DR: PVP logging should be bannable only when dealt with individually by staff in the case of abuse.
