Should there be a completely new server/map for the start of MineRealm 5.0?

Yes - I want a change/new start.

Personally the best solution IMO is to keep the current map, along with a new survival server for 5.0. That way, nobody looses their work and we get a fresh start too. The only problem is extra work for Intelli, but we have perfectly good server (former creative server) for 5.0. So why not use it?

Let's just pretend for a minute we totally delete the current survival world, let's say Intelli puts up a world download for it and we have a brand new map. (This isn't happening.)

Pros: We would gain all the benefits of 1.3, it would be fresh and new, meaning it would be fun. If we went old school and had 100blocks around spawn, then I think we would keep a lot more new guys and easily manage 100+ players all the time.

Cons: People would lose the builds they've spent hours on. All the items we've worked on for ages would be gone, and people would complain and 'quit'.

Here's the thing though, I believe after a week everyone would get over it and find it's far more fun if we had a new map with a new system. Everyone expresses the fact that they are bored with the map, etc etc, although if anyone even mentions the word 'rest' or 'wipe' they instantly threaten to quit because they don't want to lose all their stuff - Which is very understandable of course.

So yeah I'm pro map wipe, just my two cents. ;)

Thing is, the classic server as we had planned would probably average a very small amount of players. Our current server just doesn't pull in new players - A lot of Minecraft players just don't have the patience to go through all the hoops in order to find public land, even as simple as they can be if you know what you are doing.

 Guys, forget the diamond offer, cant edit that post.

A good strategy for any problem is to look at past history, and learn from its successes and failures.
  • Success: Complete wipe. A lot of work went into 2.0, do people still care that much about that?
  • Success: Putting an old map up for Download to make room (save budgets) for a preferred one.
There's my "compromise". We've done it, it works, people are happy as can be. Just put the 3.0-4.0 up for download, and Fresh, Even-ground Start for the change.

A new server doesn't solve any problems though.

In two weeks, we'd be back where we were - no public land at spawn.
Also, making the area directly around spawn public results in a massive griefed cobble mass. It doesn't work, which is why we ditched it.

New server solves Many problems. Well, just to name a few solutions:

New Biomes that people really want (Jungle...)
End (w/o whatever MsPacman did to it)
Glowstone in Nether (you could wipe it...)

1. There are villagers. Even if there aren't, it's easy enough to add more to the existing map, if we wanted.
2. Yea, I've checked - people don't really care.
3. There's nothing wrong with the current end, and nothing new for the end in 1.3. Also, we could wipe the end if we wanted without wiping the current map.
4. Same as #3.

Well I can't deny that.

Although... An ugly spawn, bad first impression... But it means new players stick around far more often, and spawn is often busy with people building and doing things, rather then the stale spawn we currently have. It might not be incredibly pleasing to the eye, like me, but it would give new guys something to do, a goal to survive and find resources and not die, rather then having to walk to land.

^^^^^^^ yes. I bet there are many great players who started like that.

People would *not* lose the builds they've spent hours on. All the items we've worked on for ages would *not* be gone

Sooo....whatcha got up your sleeve?

I wonder if some version of what you did with the creative server would be a viable solution? A main map that players start out in and that could be wiped periodically due to it looking like crap or for new features, then (finite) worlds that players could earn the right to own and (within limits) rule as they see fit.
