I know people have been waiting for the nether to come, and now it is, I will ask the question first, before you guys go excitement on it, that I feel is quite important.

How will nether portals work, with our current realm system?

I know it's gonna be easy, you hop into the nether, wander over to someone else's portal, and come back into someone else's realm. but then, you run into the realm borders issue, which should throw you to the edge of the realm, but I know in reality, that's not quite the case.

On the same token however, the realm system offers premise of the netherRealm. Perhaps my original fears are negated, if we have the ability to build in hell, and build hellRealm.

Ah, never thought about portals that are in other realms. The most obvious solution to me would be to either make portals unusable to those who are not in the realm it leads to, or have a small area (approx. 4x4) around the portal, corresponding to the visitor status of the realm. Both of these would probably be a pain to code, they just seem the simplest to me.

Oh! This made me think of another idea. If Intelli is reading this, please consider hosting some parties on a Nether map. I think it'd be fun to have everyone start out with full diamond gear, (armor, sword, pick, shovel), and have an individual kill counter/ DeathShout. Gear is reset after death. The winner is the one with the most kills.

What will be done about fast travel in the nether? Will this be changed by Notch or if not, it will make large distances on the main map very small in the nether.

This being the case I forsee an increased amount of griefings occuring. The ability to reach far away realms very quickly will also change realm warfare with many portals popping up all over the place to reach opposing realms.

Fast travel in the nether is made possible because it is 8x larger than the surface world. This means that for every 1 block moved in the nether, you move 8 in the surface world.

This, not just in survival but in creative. I'm sure Notch is thinking about this.

Either way, I'm glad that we got a good discussion going about the goods and the bads of this going... For now, I'm assuming that the nether will work exactly as we can imagine it to be, until further notice, so in that event, I would have all portals dismantled if you feel that it'll be an issue, or at least disabled by one block, so that when the servers update, this won't be a problem, until we know that our worries will be addressed.

Edit: To my NetherRealm idea, if it ever flies, I would wonder if the growth of a realm would be more difficult to level, due to the obvious lack of space available. But of course, we won't know anything until actual development does occur. I am not looking forward to Ghasts however...

I can't remember which of the threads about the Nether this was proposed in, but I liked the idea of the Nether being a straight free-for-all zone. Realms and the Nether don't seem to mesh in my head. Gathering good materials should be risky and if you want a foothold in the Nether, it should be a challenge to hold on to.

Ahh, I see your point... Maybe we can find some kind of compromise, especially if we can find that thread again... XP

Nether realms should be special and have special restrictions that make is absurdly hard to hold one. On the other hand, the bragging rights for actually holding it would be amazing.

I will personally give Nether Items to those who are willing to fight for Novasbiscuit. We have plans to colonize the entire nether, then mine it dry, and distribute the wealth.
