I think that the evolution of Minerealm's capacity to trump every other server in every way (minus locking chests or elevator plugins, w/e) is a portal to the Nether. Many other servers do have this along with a host of plugins that don't really cause much lag or anything, and then you go through a portal, it loads up the nether, and bam you're there. In and out, along with everyone else on the server. I feel like this is not only becoming a standard on the higher-end servers, but it would serve Minerealm particularly well in my opinion, for the following reasons:
1) Risky Resource Gathering: Items such as Soul Sand and Glow Dust would enter the trade market, and Soul Sand's unique properties would add another dimention to PVP areas, Realm defense and other random funloving tom-foolery. The challenge of gathering, building and surviving in the nether (looking out for both the nether NPC monsters, and other players) brings me to my next point.
2) The Real Wargrounds: The nether will be the ultimate free-for-all, and a massive staging area for wars, and a seige for territory and resources that will be constantly evolving.
3) Disposable Hell: Conceptually, until Intelli feels like taking the time to somehow implement overflow of realm territory into the nether somehow, the Nether (being a PVP, public area) will be in shambles inevitably within a few months, or even weeks. Portals, bridges, griefing galore from war, adventure, mining, and ... griefing. But, the Nether map on a server is separate entirely, and can easily be reset. Being that the place is so untraversable, and there is so much space yet to be build in on the main world, having this happen each time the area was destroyed would bring a constant freshness to the battlefield there.
4) Manifest Destiny: My ultimate dream for the Nether in Minerealm would be the possibility of realms existing independently in both areas, with each side guarding against intruders from across the portal. A sort of heaven vs hell situation. But even without that possibility just yet, I really think the nether would provide a great new opportunity for players to become more active in realm wars and PVP, as well as spawning new creativity with the availability of Nether resources.
Everyone knows I know about how unlikely ideas that involve Admin or Mod help to implement probably won't happen, or at least not any time soon after the post, but I tried to do a good job of showing here how the pros outweigh the cons, and point out how this addition of the Nether can appeal to everyone.
